Activities

The Isle of Iona and surrounding area is perfect for a short break or holiday as there is no shortage of things to do on land and sea such as wildlife watching and boat trips. Or for those who want to just relax the island has a peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking scenery.

There are plenty of established paths for keen walkers which take you around the unspoilt shorelines with their white sand beaches and crystal clear waters; ideal for beachcombing. Walkers can also trek further into the island and across to the remote western shores with atmospheric bays and coves and breathtaking views out to the Atlantic.

Wildlife Heaven

For wildlife lovers, Iona is quite simply paradise. The island contains wide varieties of flora, fauna and wildlife including the rare corncrake which can be heard and glimpsed around the iris beds during the season.

But it is Iona’s sealife which is perhaps the biggest attraction. During the warmer months, the waters around the island are home to whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks some of which are often seen from the shore but best viewed by boat. An exciting boat trip to nearby Staffa with its world famous Fingal’s Cave and the Treshnish Isles provides superb opportunities for birdwatchers to see huge numbers of seabirds including gannets, puffins and guillemots with a trip to Mull affording sightings of the rare white tailed sea eagle.

Historical and religious places of interest include the Nunnery and the world famous Iona Abbey which attracts visitors from around the world who enjoy soaking up its peaceful atmosphere and rich history. Visitors to the island can become steeped in the history of St Columba who arrived in 563 AD and established a monastery from where he introduced Christianity to Scotland.
